本日はDMM英会話第26回目のレッスンです。担当はEY先生(新しいタブで開く)でした。今日のお題は”may”と”might”の違いです。

“may”と”might”の違い

Two people are going to give presentations in the seminar.
One of them is a sever-side engineer. Another is web designer or front-side engineer. 
However, They may be not able to make the presentation due to various reasons.

2つの文章を見比べて下さい。3行目で使われている”may”と”might”だけが異なります。機械的に翻訳すると「彼は用事のためプレゼンができないかもしれない」ということになります。ですが両者ではニュアンスが大きく異なります。

may > might

“may”を使うと用事のためプレゼンができない確率が高くなります。一方、”might”を使うとプレゼンができない確率は、”may”を使うよりも低くくなります。つまり両者の違いを可能性の高さで表すと、

may > might

ということになります。あと”might”を使う理由はより自然で丁寧な言い方になるそうです。ちなみにDMM英会話ブログ(新しいタブで開く)でも”may”と”might”の違いについて同じようなことが書かれていますね。
