本日はDMM英会話第21回目のレッスンです。担当はY先生(新しいタブで開く)でした。今回のレッスンではフリートークY先生は時事問題を取り上げて、ご自身の考えとその要約を英語と日本語で教えてくださいました。

ある時事問題を取り上げてお話をしただけに、私たちはレッスンで以下の結論を得ました。

I think that the news are only telling us only 1(one) side of the story

翻訳すると「そのニュースは偏向報道をしていると思う」となります。副詞句として使われている“only 1 side of the story”に注目してください。

よくスポーツ観戦などで大差がついたゲームのことを日本語で「ワンサイドゲーム」と表現します。和製英語とも言えそうな「ワンサイド」という表現は、実は本物の英語でも使えるということでした。

Even thouh they are doing work such as volunteering, attendig to community event, 
the news are only telling us only 1 side of the story.

彼らはボランティア活動やコミュニティイベントに参加している関わらず、ニュースはコトの一面しか伝えていない。

あえて意訳をすると、”the news are only telling us only 1 side of the story.”とは「一方を聞いて沙汰をするな」ということですね。
